2011 Fire Story

Our Story of Loss and Rebuilding

On July 8, 2011, tragedy struck: a devastating fire destroyed over 70% of the Isanti County Historical Society’s archives — irreplaceable photos, documents, artifacts, and treasured records of our county’s past.

But in the ashes, we found resilience.

With overwhelming community support and grant funding from the Minnesota Historical Society, we began again. In 2013, our new building was completed — a space dedicated not only to preserving what remains but also to honoring what was lost and welcoming what’s still to come.

Support from the Minnesota Historical Society

Following the fire, that was determined to be arson, the Minnesota Historical Society stepped in with disaster relief assistance. MHS staff worked side-by-side with our team and volunteers, helping assess what could be salvaged and offering expertise in preservation and recovery.

“We are greatly saddened by this news and the great loss of historical collections and records that the Isanti County Historical Society has preserved so well for Minnesotans.”
— Stephen Elliott, Director and CEO, Minnesota Historical Society

“Unfortunately, the Isanti County Historical Society has lost the majority of its collections. However, there are collections that will be salvaged — perhaps some historical records, documents, and photographs.”
— Bob Herskovitz, MHS Outreach Conservator

We are grateful for all our partnerships and the continued support that has made recovery possible.

Beautifully Renewed

Our facility has been restored — but our mission is still underway. With each donated photo, letter, object, or record, the story of Isanti County is being rewritten, reconnected, and renewed.

How You Can Help

We still need your support.
While our structure is rebuilt, the heart of our archive — the items that connect us — still needs healing.
