Research Room Guidelines

At the museum, researchers are asked to observe the following rules so that documents and artifacts may be preserved.

  • Ask staff for the materials you want to see. Staff will refile them when you are finished.
  • Keep the material in the order and condition in which you find it. Remove one folder at a time from a box or file. Keep material in its folder.
  • Do not eat food or drink beverages while handling manuscripts, photos or artifacts.
  • Use clean hands when handling materials. When handling photos, you may either wash your hands or wear cotton gloves provided by staff. Handle all materials carefully.

Photo Use Policy
The Isanti County Historical Society has been entrusted with the permanent care of the photographs in its collections. The Commercial Use Fee has been implemented so that the Society has a base of financial support that will enable it to continue to give the best care possible to these photos. This will allow future generations to have access to these fascinating artifacts of county history. For both commercial and non-profit photo reproduction, the Isanti County Historical Society requires that a Request for Permission Form be filled out and along with the Patron Request for Use and Copy Form, be submitted prior to the reproduction of requested materials. This form is available on-line or by calling 763-689-4229. In addition to reproduction costs, the Historical Society may also charge a separate use fee. Those seeking permission to publish, display, or broadcast reproductions of photographs in the collections must complete the form prior to placing their photograph order. Please read the following conditions carefully. The completed Request for Permission Form must be returned to the Isanti County Historical Society.
Credit must be given to the Isanti County Historical Society and the creator of the work if known.
The credit line for each photo will be supplied by the Isanti County Historical Society on the Request for Permission Form. Credit lines must appear with the image or on a credit page indicating the page number and location on the page for each work. Films, videotapes, and slide shows may use a credit section at the beginning or end to give credit to the Isanti County Historical Society. For Webster use, credit should appear either next to or directly below the image.
Permission to reproduce, publish, broadcast, or display a Historical Society photograph must be in writing. The request should include the title, author, publishing year, name of publishing company or organization responsible, and the photograph’s accession number and description. NOTE: Possession of a Historical Society photo does not constitute permission to use it.
The Isanti County Historical Society requests that one copy of printed works (books, brochures, magazines, newspaper articles, videos. or ads) be donated for its files.
If the copyright is still in effect, the publisher must seek permission from the creator of the work or his/her heirs. The Isanti County Historical Society will provide the creator’s name, if known.
Permission is for one-time use only. The Historical Society retains all rights to the works and they must no be used for any purpose other than that listed on the permission form.
No photo use fee will be charged for photos used for news items.
Photographs may be cropped to suit design and layout, but they may not be altered or drawn upon so that they look in any way different from the way they appear in the historical collection.
The Historical Society reserves the right to refuse to grant permission and/or provide photographic reproduction to publishers and individuals who have not complied with its policies.
The Isanti County Historical Society reserves the right to decline to reproduce fragile items or for inappropriate use.
Commercial users (for-profit corporations or individuals) must pay the use fee in advance of receiving the duly signed permission form and photo reproductions.
Due to the Federal Copyright Law, ICHS is not able to reproduce photographs or images from books that are protected by copyright law (books published less than 100 years ago).
Printers, graphic artists, and other professionals assisting with the photo publishing process may not keep copies (print, negative, digital, or other form) of the photo(s) for their use. If ICHS discovers that a printer, graphic artist, or other professional has used a photo from ICHS collections without permission, ICHS and/or the copyright holder may seek legal restitution.
ICHS will provide a high-quality, color photocopy of the requested photo(s). ICHS will not provide negatives or transparencies of photos.
ICHS Copyright and Use Information
The nature of historical archival collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult to determine. Whenever possible, the Isanti County Historical Society provides information about copyright owners and other restrictions in the catalog records, finding aids, and donor records. The Society provides such information as a service to aid patrons in determining the appropriate use of an item, but the legal determination ultimately rests with the patron.

Images reproduced from the collections of the Isanti County Historical Society are for viewing and personal use only. Permission for commercial use or any publication, manipulation, display or distribution is only granted by written application to the Isanti County Historical Society.

Permission and license to use photographic reproductions is granted via a Request for Permission Form and may involve a use fee for commercial use.

** NOTICE WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS **

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use, that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
